IEC 61850 is the international Protection, Automation, and Control Systems (PACS) standard. The scope of IEC 61850 implementation continues to grow in a wide range of areas, including protection, automation, system control and data acquisition (SCADA), metering, and condition monitoring. IEC 61850 is considered an enabler for meeting power system challenges because it provides a standardised framework for communication and automation in electrical substations and power systems. It supports interoperability between devices from different manufacturers, enabling seamless integration and efficient operation. Flexibility, efficiency, scalability and cost effectiveness are the key features that make the IEC an enabler in the energy transition race. Those capabilities help utilities and operators meet the demands of modern power systems, including increased energy consumption, environmental concerns, and the need for rapid technological advancements. The IEC 61850 is revolutionising the industry by introducing the concept of a Process Bus and enabling the Digital Substation.
